Where it started…
The property was initially purchased by the Rockhill family in 1690 when they emigrated from England to Mansfield.
The property eventually entered the family when Walter Kirby purchased the property in 1926 from Henry Comfort. The farm was passed down to his son Percivil who passed it along to his sister to Ceala and her husband Joseph D Goodenough who sold their farm on Elbow Lane in Burlington, NJ.
In 1949, Goodenough Farms was established as a dairy, supplying milk to Cumberland Farms. With increasing input costs and a loss of dairy production in Burlington County, the decision was made
to sell the herd and transition into grain and forage crops. The last cow on the farm was sold in
1996. Or so we thought…..
In 2016, the kids and Big Joe finally wore down Doug with enough begging and reminiscing on
the sound of the old herd that the posts were set, the fence was hung and we welcomed
one heifer and three steers back to the farm, Eleanor, Little Man, Hoss and Zeke.
Where we are today…
Today the family farms 500 acres with 280 of those acres being on the home farm. Farming to us is a way of life. On any given day, you can find Doug working alongside his kids - Joey, Dylan & Abbey - with frequent help from Dylan’s best friend, Jake & Abbey’s other half, Matt. Keep an eye down the driveway as you will often see the grandkids, Rory & JD, being pulled in their trusty wagon by Michele to help (or hinder) the daily farm chores.
Why we do what we do…
Farming can be a thankless job but we are committed to preserving the land we are on while raising high-quality products to nourish our family, and now hopefully yours. At Goodenough Farms, sustainability isn’t just a practice—it’s a promise. We raise our beef with the same care and dedication that we would for our own family’s table. Our commitment to sustainable farming means careful land stewardship, ethical animal care, and a focus on quality over quantity. By nurturing the environment and the animals, we ensure healthier, tastier beef that fuels our loved ones and yours. This is why we do what we do: to provide a product we believe in, from our family to yours, that supports a healthier planet and a more responsible future.
